WWL Radio is now broadcasting across Wigan and St Helens on DAB+ following the successful launch of the area’s new small-scale DAB multiplex.

Long-standing hospital radio station WWL Radio, covering the hospitals of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh, was a successful partner in applying for the licence to run the SSDAB multiplex for the Wigan and St Helen’s area.

WWL Radio has been broadcasting to the area’s three hospitals since the 1970s, with initial sports broadcasts dating back to the early ‘50s.

Diane Herring the Chair of WWL Radio said, “The patients and staff in our hospitals remain our core priority, but for some time we have recognised our community of interest goes beyond the hospitals themselves as changes in health provision have seen new areas to cover, as we look at outpatient service, mental health services and community based health services.

A key principle behind WWL Radio is the provision of entertainment for patients, but it also includes health and well-being guidance and information.  We now have a great opportunity to broadcast to that wider community and develop our services, not least in the provision of positive health messaging.

Having a DAB presence that can reach around 600,000 adult listeners will also allow us to bring the wider community and the hospital community together.”

To listen to WWL Radio you will need a DAB+ radio.  You may need to rescan for the new channels, and you will then find WWL Radio in the search of stations.

WWL Radio will be looking for volunteer community reporters from all the areas our output covers.  To find out more about community reporting email wrightingtonhospitalradio@hotmail.com
