WWL Radio was established in 1973 as Wrightington Hospital Radio and became a registered charity in the early 1990s. Nearly fifty years later, in 2022, we registered under our new name to demonstrate that our service spans every site of the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust — and to show how proud we are to be part of the WWL family.
Our mission remains constant: to lift spirits, share important updates and create moments of connection for patients, families and staff. We broadcast round the clock with a rich mix of live, recorded and automated programmes, as well as live commentary from the DW Stadium covering both Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic home fixtures.
At the heart of WWL Radio is people. Around twenty volunteers give their time to research music, produce shows, visit wards for requests and keep our equipment running. Together they ensure the station is there whenever someone needs a friendly voice, a favourite song or a slice of local community life.
We're always delighted to hear from listeners. Share a request, dedication or celebration and our team will do their best to include it in the schedule.
